ACETYLENE

This Acetylene sometimes also referred as DA Gas, is a hydrocarbon. It is basically colourless fuel gas and used extensively in industries for metal cutting and brazing applications. Acetylene produces highest known flame temperature when mixed with Oxygen. Commercially it is produced by reaction of Calcium Carbide with water. The Acetylene is highly unstable in nature and needs to be dissolved in a solvent called Acetone or DMF. The gas is stored in Acetylene gas cylinders saturated with required quantities of solvent. Acetylene is widely used in metal cutting, welding and brazing. It is used in mining to light up mines and caves. It is used as a hardening agent in the steel industry. Other applications include its use in pharmaceutical production, carbon dating and in manufacturing polyethylene plastics like PVC and PVDF.
